*A Pastoral Reflection on a Historic Moment for the Diocese of Ikot Ekpene*
The long-awaited day is finally here! From the *11th to the 19th of September, 2025, the Catholic Diocese of Ikot Ekpene steps into a radiant new chapter of her history as she hosts, for the very first time, the Second Plenary Assembly of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN).* This sacred gathering unfolds at the serene *Diocesan Retreat and Youth Development Centre, Nto Ekpu Ikot, Nko, Obot Akara Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State.*
This is no ordinary event. Twice each year, the Catholic Bishops of Nigeria — successors of the Apostles — assemble in solemn communion to pray, reflect, and discern the path of the Church in Nigeria. Together, they bear the hopes of millions of faithful, lifting them to God and seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit for the mission of Christ in our land.
To welcome this august body is a singular grace for our diocese, under the pastoral leadership of *Most Rev. Camillus Raymond Umoh.* Ikot Ekpene, for these days, becomes the heartbeat of the Catholic Church in Nigeria — our soil blessed by the footsteps of shepherds, our air filled with their prayers, our homes open in hospitality. Truly, the universal Church gathers in our midst!
The choice of the venue is rich in meaning. *The Retreat and Youth Development Centre* is a sacred space set apart for prayer, renewal, and the formation of the young. How fitting, then, that the bishops will gather here — reminding us that the Church’s mission must always spring from prayer and remain oriented to the future of faith, especially in our youth.
For us, the faithful of Ikot Ekpene Diocese, this moment is both a blessing and a responsibility. A blessing — because the presence of the bishops sanctifies our land and strengthens our communion with the wider Church. A responsibility — because we are called to sustain this sacred moment with fervent prayer, joyful welcome, and wholehearted support. Each parish, each family, each heart is invited to share in this history of grace.
The deliberations of this Plenary Assembly will surely help shape the pastoral vision and prophetic witness of the Catholic Church in Nigeria. It is not merely a bishops’ event — it is an event for the whole Church, a call for every Catholic to deepen faith, embrace unity, and recommit to the mission of Christ in our time.
As we embrace this milestone, let us open our hearts wide to God’s grace. May this Second Plenary Assembly in Ikot Ekpene be remembered as a jubilee of faith, communion, and mission — bearing abundant fruits for the glory of God and the salvation of souls.

🙏 Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love. Renew your Church in Nigeria, and guide our bishops in wisdom, faith, and unity.
*To God be the glory!*
