INFORMATION UPDATE AND APPLICATION FORMS FOR THE 2024/2025 SESSION

Please find enclose three leaflets containing general information on the academic Programmes offered at the Catholic Institute of West Africa, Port Harcourt.
  1. Sub-Degree Programme:  Offers courses leading to the award of the Certificate and Diploma in Theology. A Certificate of Attendance in Theology is also awarded to those who attend as participants. It is open to the Religious, Catechists and other qualified lay persons who have no previous training in Theology.  Further details are contained in the enclosed leaflet.

  2. Undergraduate Programme:  Offers courses leading to the award of B.Th. (Bachelor in Theology) and B.A in Pastoral Communication. These courses are open to Religious, catechists and other lay persons.  The aim is to facilitate the theological formation of members of Christ’s Faithful, who are not clerics, to participate more actively and effectively in the work of the proclamation of the Gospel as well as in rendering useful services in the Nigerian Church.  The leaflet is enclosed for further details.

  3. Post-Graduate Programme:  It consists of courses leading to the award of M.A., M.Th., STL and Ph.D. degrees in various branches of Theology, Canon Law and Pastoral Communication.  There is also an urgent need for candidates in Systematic Theology as well as Spiritual Theology (Spirituality). The courses are open to persons who are already graduates in theology, or Communication.  An enclosed leaflet also gives details.

  4. Post-Graduate Diploma in Theology:  It is also possible to send clerics, brothers, sisters for postgraduate Diploma.  The courses here are interesting as they help to provide solutions to general practical and pastoral problems often encountered in the parishes and dioceses.  Diocesan Priests and Religious, who have worked for between ten years to twenty-five years could be admitted here for this refresher Programme – aggiornamento.  The candidates would be expected to make provision for their accommodation.  The duration is one year.

  5. Sabbatical Programme:Clerics and Religious, who are due for the Sabbatical Programme, could also be sent to CIWA to advance their knowledge in Theology. This Programme will help participants in a theological re-awakening that seeks to apply theological concepts to African cultural values and traditions. They would return to their Dioceses and Congregations better equipped to help address the current issues/problems of inculturation and contextualization. It will be helpful if arrangements for accommodation could be made by candidates with Parishes and Religious houses in the Diocese of Port Harcourt, in case CIWA accommodation space is already filled up. Please send somebody.

  6. Long Vacation Language Programme:  Courses are taken in Latin, German, French and Italian. There are also courses in Hausa, Ibo and Yoruba. The courses are usually for six weeks and starting from July 20th– September 4th, 2009.  Since post graduate students are expected to study at least two of the first four mentioned above, it would be instructive if they could be sent for this Long Vacation Language Programme.  There is accommodation for participants who so desire.
