The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Most Rev. Ignatius A. Kaigama, on Tuesday, 25 November 2025, received His Excellency Roberto Mengoni, the newly appointed Italian Ambassador to Nigeria, who paid him a courtesy visit. The meeting reaffirmed the long-standing historical ties between Italy and the Catholic Church.
Archbishop Kaigama warmly welcomed Ambassador Mengoni and provided an overview of the Church’s wide-ranging social, humanitarian, and peacebuilding efforts within the Archdiocese. He highlighted ongoing initiatives in reconciliation, interreligious dialogue, education, healthcare, and support for vulnerable groups—projects that have contributed significantly to stability and community cohesion in the Federal Capital Territory.
Both leaders explored potential areas of collaboration, particularly in strengthening the impact of existing social programmes and enhancing outreach to communities in need. The Archbishop expressed optimism that cooperation with the Italian Embassy could open new opportunities for joint initiatives aimed at promoting peace, development, and mutual understanding.
Describing the meeting as friendly and fruitful, Archbishop Kaigama wished the Ambassador a successful and impactful tenure in Nigeria. Ambassador Mengoni, in turn, expressed gratitude for the warm reception and commended the Church’s unwavering commitment to peace and nation-building.
The visit carried added symbolic significance given Italy’s historic relationship with the Catholic Church. Although the Vatican is an independent sovereign state, its location within Rome and the centuries-old legacy of Italian–Church relations continue to shape Italy’s diplomatic engagements worldwide. Italian envoys traditionally maintain strong ties with Catholic institutions, recognising their influential role in education, humanitarian work, and moral leadership.
