Archbishop Martins Rallies Prayers for the Soul of His Colleague, Archbishop Akubeze

ARCHBISHOP MARTINS

By Fr. Michael Nsikak Umoh

“A faithful friend is a sturdy shelter; he who finds one finds a treasure.” — Sirach 6:14

The sudden passing of the Metropolitan Archbishop of Benin City, Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, on July 9, 2026, has plunged the Catholic Church in Nigeria into deep mourning, yet it has also evoked a profound display of Christian charity, fraternal loyalty, and pastoral solidarity. Leadership in the Church is often tested in moments of grief, and the swift, heartfelt response of the Metropolitan Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Alfred Adewale Martins, stands as the mark of a truly great shepherd.

By immediately issuing a circular from the Lagos Archdiocesan Chancery to break the news to his clergy, religious, and lay faithful, Archbishop Martins did not merely execute an administrative task. Instead, he acted out of deep loyalty to a long-time friend and colleague. Expressing his sorrow with a heavy heart yet anchored by a strong faith in Christ and hope in the resurrection, Archbishop Martins rallied the entire Catholic community in Lagos to offer Masses for the repose of his brother bishop’s soul and to pray for the consolation of the bereaved family and the Archdiocese of Benin City.

This wave of prayer and solidarity honours a man whose life was defined by quiet dignity and monumental service. In a world that often mistakes noise for strength, he was a quiet gentleman; a peaceful presence whose authority flowed from an innate, radiant integrity. This rare blend of sharp intelligence, accessibility, and humility defined his entire priesthood, which began with his ordination on October 3, 1987. He beautifully embodied the wisdom of St. Francis de Sales, who noted that there is nothing so strong as true gentleness, and nothing so gentle as true strength.

Archbishop Akubeze’s administrative and pastoral acumen shone brilliantly across every level of his episcopal leadership. Appointed by Pope Benedict XVI, he made history as the pioneer Bishop of the newly created Diocese of Uromi, where he was consecrated on February 25, 2006. He laid a solid foundational infrastructure for the young diocese with structural precision and a father’s heart. His visionary leadership led to his elevation to the Metropolitan See of Benin City on March 18, 2011, and his official installation on April 28, 2011. Beyond his local archdiocese, he became a leading, stabilising voice for the national Church, serving as Vice President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) from 2012 to 2018, and subsequently as the President of the Episcopal Conference from 2018 to 2022.

Throughout his ministry, Archbishop Akubeze distinguished himself as a loving shepherd and an outstanding administrator who was deeply concerned with the holistic growth of his flock, particularly the spiritual and intellectual formation of his priests. Yet, his pastoral care extended just as passionately to the laity and the youth. A primary testament to his vision as a shepherd was his dedicated advancement of the cause for sainthood of Vivian Uchechi Ogu, a 14-year-old layperson who was martyred in 2009 while fiercely defending her chastity. Recognising early on that her heroic life was a powerful model of faith for the modern world, Archbishop Akubeze became the chief champion of her legacy. He inaugurated the Vivian Ogu Movement in 2014, secured the necessary clearances from the Vatican, and officially declared her a “Servant of God” on October 7, 2023. In May 2024, he officially officiated the opening session of the diocesan tribunal. Through these tireless efforts, he sent a clear message that holiness is attainable by ordinary laypeople and the youth, providing young people worldwide with a concrete, inspiring beacon of moral courage.

For all his national achievements, the true greatness of this loving shepherd lay in his hidden, immense capacity for charity. He was a man of few words with a heart overflowing with love, practicing the quiet gospel of anonymous kindness without ever seeking the spotlight. This side of his character is beautifully captured in the story of a stranded Nigerian lady at an airport in Rome. Short of funds and overwhelmed by excess luggage fees, she was met by Archbishop Akubeze, whom she had never met before. Recognising a child of God in distress, the Archbishop immediately stepped in, paid 200 pounds out of his own pocket to rescue her, and later completely refused to accept any refund when she frantically tried to repay him in Lagos. He gave without keeping score and loved without expecting a return, perfectly living out the scriptural exhortation from the First Letter of John to love not with words or speech, but with actions and in truth.

As the Church returns this calm, brilliant, and selfless shepherd to Jesus Christ, the Chief Shepherd, the faithful are comforted by the words of St. John Chrysostom, who reminded believers that the capsule of a man’s life is measured not by its duration, but by its donation. Archbishop Akubeze’s donation to the Church and humanity was immense.

Guided by the spiritual solidarity of colleagues like Archbishop Martins and the enduring prayers of the flock he loved so dearly, he leaves behind a legacy of integrity, generosity, and faith that will inspire generations to come.

As we all continue to intercede for him, may God grant Archbishop Augustine Obiora Akubeze eternal rest in His Kingdom. Amen.
