Sunday, August 25, was a momentous day at the ongoing CBCN plenary in Auchi, marked by a unique blend of spiritual significance and celebration. The day began with the official Opening Mass for the 2024 second CBCN plenary at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Auchi. The Chief Celebrant at the Mass was the CBCN President, Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, while the homily was given by the host Bishop, Most Rev. Gabriel Dunia. He warmly welcomed all bishops, clergy and guests to the Diocese of Auchi. He emphasized the crucial role of Catholic bishops as fathers of the church, gathered with Jesus Christ in Auchi to continue the work of Christ through prayer, faith, and fasting.
The opening ceremony followed at Uyi Grand Event Centre, commencing with the enthronement of the Bible by Most Rev. Emmanuel Badejo, Catholic Bishop of Oyo. The event witnessed in attendance, bishops, priests, religious, state and church dignitaries, and others.
In his welcome address, the CBCN President urged the government to implement drastic reforms to alleviate the suffering of Nigerian citizens. Goodwill messages were also received from the Prelate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), among others.
Later in the evening, there was a Solemn Vespers and Benediction at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Afowa – Afashio. During the Benediction, Most Rev. Mark Nzukwein, Catholic Bishop of Wukari, encouraged bishops working in challenging dioceses to embrace their struggles, trusting that God will transform their perspectives and help them rely on divine providence rather than human wisdom.
At the dinner later held at St. Philip’s Catholic Church, Jattu, the bishops honoured Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze as he marked his 68th birthday.
