The President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, has called for a change of mindset and sincere efforts towards building mutual trust among Christians and Muslims in Nigeria.
Speaking at the opening session of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) triannual meeting in Owerri on 30th April, 2025, Archbishop Ugorji emphasized the need to overcome old prejudices, animosities, hate speech, and distrust that have deepened divisions between the two bodies.
The theme of the meeting, “Building Mutual Trust for National Unity,” was described as apt and timely, given the ethno-religious conflicts and tensions that often tear the nation apart.
Archbishop Ugorji challenged Christian and Muslim leaders to make joint statements denouncing religious extremism, fanaticism, and criminal activities that perpetuate violence and insecurity.
He expressed worry over the rising level of violence, senseless shedding of blood, and the plight of displaced families suffering in IDP camps across the nation. The archbishop therefore called on religious leaders to promote peace, fight against extremism, and embody the spirit of fraternity and peace.
Additionall, the CBCN President cited the “Document on Human Fraternity and Living Together” signed by Pope Francis and Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmed el Tayeb, in Abu Dhabi in 2019, emphasizing that religions must never incite wars, hate, hostility, or violence. He urged NIREC members to adopt an attitude of respect, understanding, and hope in their relationships, recognizing shared values and differences in faith.
The NIREC meeting aims to foster cooperation and collaboration among adherents of different religions, promoting mutual respect for freedom of religion, thought, and expression. Archbishop Ugorji’s message highlighted the critical role of interfaith dialogue in building trust and promoting national unity in Nigeria. Rev. Fr. Lawrence Chike Emehel is the Director of the Mission & Dialogue Department at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, and a key representative of Catholic block at the national level of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
