The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Archbishop Daniel C. Okoh, has described the Catholic Church as a beacon of hope in Nigeria’s darkest moments.
Speaking at the Opening Ceremony of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) first 2025 plenary meeting in Abuja, Archbishop Okoh commended the Catholic Church for its unwavering commitment to the Gospel and the common good.
“The Catholic Church, through her unwavering commitment to the Gospel and the common good, has continued to inspire positive transformation in Nigeria,” Archbishop Okoh commented.
The CAN helmsman noted that the prophetic voice, tireless advocacy for social justice, and unwavering stance on truth and equity of the Catholic Bishops in Nigeria, remain a guiding light in these challenging times.
Commenting on the theme of the CBCN plenary meeting, “Jubilee of Hope: A Light for a Better Nigeria,” the CAN President observed that the theme resonates deeply with the spiritual and socio-political journey of Nigeria. He urged the Catholic Bishops to remain steadfast in faith, united in purpose, and committed to building a Nigeria where love, peace, and justice prevail.
The CAN President also expressed his appreciation for the support of the Catholic Church in the work of CAN, particularly in promoting social justice and national development. He also used the opportunity to inform the Conference that CAN will be celebrating its 50th anniversary next year, 2026, and plans are underway to mark the occasion.
The CAN President prayed that the plenary session would be a time of divine inspiration and renewed dedication to the collective mission of the Church in Nigeria.
“As you deliberate on the way forward for the Church and our nation, I pray that the Holy Spirit will grant you wisdom, strength, and renewed courage to be bearers of hope in the face of adversity,” Archbishop Okoh prayed.
