Catholic church set to celebrate 50th memorial anniversary of Aggey

The Catholic Church has said that it is set to celebrate the life and times of the first indigenous archbishop in the Archdiocese of Lagos, Most Rev. (Dr.) John Kwao Amuzu Aggey, on the occasion of his 50th memorial anniversary.

The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Alfred Adewale Martins, who disclosed this at a press briefing yesterday, said activities lined up for the event include a post-humuous birthday mass to hold on March 5, 2022 at St Leo’s Catholic Church, Ikeja, Lagos; the 50th anniversary thanksgiving mass to hold March 13 at Holy Cross Cathedral Lagos Island and the Life And Times of Archbishop John Kwao Amuzu Aggey online celebration to hold on zoom platform on March 14.

Martins, who was represented by the Diocese’s Director of Social Communications, Rev. Fr. Anthony Godonu, said: “The contribution of John Aggey cannot be quantified. He took over from expatriate archbishop and became the first indigenous archbishop. He worked hard to stabilise the transition from the missionaries to the indigenous priesthood in the Catholic Church.”

Chairman, All Purpose Committee, Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, Mr. Peter Nwanze, while corroborating Martins, said Aggey was humble and identified with the masses.
