Charting a New Socio‑Political Course: 2027 Elections as Watershed for Development in Nigeria

By Fr. Michael Nsikak Umoh

In his opening remarks at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Church and Society Department of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Fr. Peter Babangida Audu, Director of the department, underscored the pivotal role of the upcoming 2027 elections in shaping Nigeria’s future. Speaking under the AGM’s theme “Harbingers of Hope: Mainstreaming Catholic Social Teaching for Development in Nigeria,” Fr. Babangida declared that the 2027 polls represent a “watershed for development in Nigeria,” urging the Church to actively guide the nation toward a just and peaceful socio‑political trajectory.

He said that “The coming 2027 elections present a critical moment for our country – a watershed that will shape our development trajectory.” He emphasized that the elections are not merely a political event but a decisive turning point for national progress.

Fr. Babangida called on the faithful and all stakeholders to engage responsibly, ensuring that the electoral process reflects the principles of Catholic Social Teaching. “As a Church, we must form consciences, promote justice, insist on good governance, strengthen civic participation, and mobilise for peaceful political processes.”

He highlighted the Justice, Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) as a key instrument for fostering ethical leadership and accountability during the elections. “Our JDPC structures are uniquely positioned to guide this process with integrity and courage.”

The director stressed the importance of inter‑unit collaboration among the department’s five pillars—Education, Health, Migrants and Refugees, Family and Human Life, and the Justice, Development and Peace Commission—to amplify the Church’s impact on Nigeria’s political landscape. “When we bring these strengths together, we become a formidable force for national transformation.”

Fr. Babangida’s remarks come amid widespread concerns about insecurity, economic hardship, and political instability in Nigeria. By framing the 2027 elections as a “watershed” moment, he positioned the Church as a moral beacon, urging citizens to view the polls as an opportunity to steer the nation toward sustainable development and social justice.

The AGM, which gathered directors from across Nigeria’s dioceses, serves as a platform for the Church to “reflect, evaluate, strengthen coordination, and chart a clearer path for the year ahead,” as Fr. Babangida noted. This gathering underscores the Church’s commitment to translating its social teachings into concrete actions that influence public policy and governance.
