The Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN) officially launched the Spiritual Advocacy for Migrants and Refugees initiative, a comprehensive pastoral care program designed to provide spiritual support and advocacy for vulnerable migrant and refugee populations. This initiative is a response to the numerous challenges faced by migrants and refugees globally, and seeks to raise awareness about the opportunities presented by migration.
During a special Mass held at the St Gabriel Chaplaincy, CSN on July 25, 2024, the Secretary of the Migrants and Refugees unit of CSN, Rev. Fr. Augustine Akhogba, in his homily, emphasized the significance of spiritual support for migrants and refugees. He outlined the programme’s objectives, which include providing prayers, reflection, and spiritual care for all categories of migrants in Nigeria and beyond. He also mentioned that the programme is aimed at engaging dioceses, parishes, and pastoral communities across the country to ensure a collective effort in supporting migrants.
Rev. Fr. Akhogba reiterated the need for collective action, stating, “Through this initiative, we seek to remember and pray for those who are voluntarily or forcibly displaced, those who are far from home, and those who have lost hope or have no home to return to.”
The Episcopal Chairman of the Migrants and Refugees unit of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), Most Rev. Yohanna Bulus, represented by Rev. Fr. Michael Banjo, Deputy Secretary General of CSN, officially launched the initiative, congratulating and praying for the diocesan coordinators for their dedication towards advancing the apostolate nationwide.
This initiative demonstrates the Catholic Church’s commitment to providing spiritual care and advocacy for vulnerable populations, underscoring the importance of collective action in addressing the challenges faced by migrants and refugees.
