Dearest friends, it is true that sometimes, a number of Catholics deliberately omit Holy Mass on SUNDAYS and even on other Holy Days HOLY DAYS OF OBLIGATION: How many are they?without knowing that it is a GRAVE SIN that requires repentance and sacramental CONFESSION.
Now, for a sin to be GRAVE/MORTAL, there must be 3 requirements, namely: the object has to be a Grave Matter, it must be committed with Full Knowledge and then with a Deliberate Will/Consent (Cf. CCC, n. 1857).
Now, let us reason it together and then determine if a deliberate omission of Sunday Mass is a GRAVE MATTER or not. Come to think of it, that in a week (7 days), God allows and supports us to go about our normal businesses, works, schools, etc. for 6 days and then demands that we dedicate just 1 day entirely for Him in sincere worship of him (Cf. Deut 5:12-15, CCC, 2051). Please, dearest friends, has God really demanded too much from us? Is it not a clear expression of INGRATITUDE and an act of INJUSTICE towards God, when you and I deliberately omit Holy Mass on a Sunday? Is it not really a GRAVE matter?
Now, let us look at what the Church teaches about it. Remember, that when Jesus Christ gave Peter the KEYS of the Kingdom of Heaven and the the AUTHORITY to bind and loose, then he gave the Church the Authority to teach Moral Principles for every human person that truly desires salvation (Cf. Matt 16:17-19, CCC, 2049-2051). Based on the above AUTHORITY, given to the Church by Jesus Christ himself, the Church teaches this:
On SUNDAYS and other HOLY DAYS of obligation the faithful are BOUND to participate in the Mass…The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. Those who DELIBERATELY fail in this obligation commit a GRAVE SIN (Cf. CCC, nos. 2180-2181).
Finally, dearest friends, remember that a MORTAL Sin requires a sincere REPENTANCE and then going for a Sacramental CONFESSION before receiving the Holy Communion (Cf.CCC, n. 1385, 1395).
May the Blessed Virgin Mary keep interceding for us as we struggle to live as true sons and daughters of God. Amen🙏🏽
