Overcoming internal, external challenges: Bishop Nzukwein’s advice to Caritas Nigeria @14

The Catholic Bishop of Wukari Diocese, Most Rev. Mark Maigida Nzukwein, urged Caritas Nigeria to remain steadfast in its commitment to serving the poor and vulnerable, despite internal and external challenges.

Bishop Nzukwein gave this advice in his homily during a Mass celebrated at St. Gabriel Chaplaincy, Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Abuja, to commemorate Caritas Nigeria’s 14th anniversary, on Sunday, September 22, 2024.

Emphasizing the importance of selfless service, Bishop Nzukwein cited Jesus’ teachings on servant leadership, urging Caritas Nigeria to adopt a humble and compassionate approach in its outreach programs. “True greatness lies in humility and faithful commitment to the service of the common good,” Bishop Nzukwein stressed.

The homilist acknowledged Caritas Nigeria’s remarkable achievements, having reached over 10 million beneficiaries through its various initiatives, including healthcare delivery, education, and humanitarian interventions.

Bishop Nzukwein, who disclosed that his diocese has benefited from Caritas Nigeria’s generosity, particularly in alleviating the suffering of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees, expressed gratitude for the organization’s tireless efforts. “Caritas Nigeria has become a veritable tool for indigenous charity and development,” he noted.

However, Bishop Nzukwein also highlighted the internal challenges that can hinder effective charity work, including unrestrained love for self, greed, and ambition. He cautioned against these pitfalls, emphasizing the need for Caritas Nigeria to remain focused on its mission and values.

To overcome external challenges, Bishop Nzukwein advocated for stronger partnerships, particularly in peace building and advocacy. He urged Caritas Nigeria to continue its laudable initiatives, especially in addressing Nigeria’s economic and security challenges.

“Embracing servant leadership, as exemplified by Jesus, is the only saving grace for our nation,” Bishop Nzukwein emphasized.

The anniversary celebration was attended by Caritas Nigeria’s management and staff, priests, religious and lay staff of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN), agencies of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), and representatives from partner organizations.
