Father Odeyemi, who will join the archdiocesan staff in August, succeeds M. Anette Mandley-Turner, who led the office for more than three decades.

“The Office of Multicultural Ministry provides leadership and direction for the Archdiocese of Louisville on matters related to cultural diversity,” an announcement about the appointment said. “It is a resource to parishes, schools, and pastoral leaders to ensure a multicultural perspective in the activities of local faith communities. The director of the office serves as a liaison to the various cultural communities within the archdiocese.”

Father Odeyemi, who was ordained to the priesthood in 1994, came to the United States to study in 2010. Most recently, he has served on the faculty of Xavier University of Louisiana, including in the Institute of Black Catholic Studies. He has also assisted at parishes in Pittsburgh and New Orleans.

Father Odeyemi is the author of several books and numerous articles and is an active member of the Catholic Theological Society of America, the announcement said.

In the Diocese of Ilorin, he served as a pastor and as dean of studies/students at the seminary of St. Peter the Apostle. He also served as president of the diocese’s presbyterial council and as a consultor.

In addition to his seminary studies, he earned a Master of Arts degree in religion and religious education from Fordham University in New York and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in systematic theology from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.

Until Father Odeyemi’s appointment begins, Dr. F. DeKarlos Blackmon, vice chancellor, will serve as the temporary director. He will be assisted by Father William Bowling, who will assist the staff working at the agency’s Catholic Enrichment Center.
