WE NEED TO BUILD A CULTURE OF INTEGRITY

WE NEED TO BUILD A CULTURE OF INTEGRITY
(By the Catholic Bishops of Owerri Ecclesiastical Province in Owerri).

Good, moral people concerned about others often get a good government that cares for the people.

While we bemoan the failings of our successive governments, we must also question our people’s attitudes and value systems.

At the root of this endemic problem of bad governance is a prevalence of a culture of corruption and dishonesty in the dealings of our people – in business, civil service, even in our Churches and community living.

The scripture is clear: “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverb 14:34).

The time for the rebuilding and reorientation of the foundations of our society is now! All segments of our society must come together to reject the craze for quick money through dishonest dealings, the get-rich-quick syndrome that is driving our youths into crime, cultism, kidnapping, prostitution, idolatry and other forms of dirty dealings.

We appeal to our people to re-embrace the values of honest living, honest efforts, transparency and fairness in our dealings with one another.

We, as Church, must make sure that we shun, condemn and reject any form of ill-gotten gains so as not to promote this threatening culture of corruption.
