Like other previous days of the plenary meeting of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) holding at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria in Abuja, the fourth day, Wednesday 16 February, 2023, started with exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Holy Hour Adoration and Benediction. Most Rev. Moses Chikwe, the Auxiliary Bishop of Owerri was the Chief Celebrant at the Holy Mass and the homilist.Archbishop Matthew Man’oso Ndagoso of Kaduna Archdiocese moderated the morning session as the communique to be released was processed, the Bishops to represent the Nigerian Conference at the international synod in Rome were determined and the five study groups later gave the reports on the deliberations they had the previous day. It was indeed a very tedious session for the Bishops which ended with the midday prayer late in the afternoon. Later in the evening, the Catholic Bishops launched the tree planting campaign in the spirit of Laudato si of Pope Francis. This was organised by the Church and State Department of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, under the chairmanship of Most Rev. Alfred Adewale Martins of Lagos Archdiocese and the directorship of Very Rev. Fr. Uchechukwu Obodoechina.
The Director General/CEO of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall, Dr. Yusuf Maina-Bukar, was represented by the Director, Planning Policy and Coordination Department, H.U.L Ibrahim (Mrs), who gave an Address on the importance of tree planting.
In his opening remark the President of the conference of bishops, Archbishop Lucius I. Ugorji, urged Catholics and all Nigerians to embark on tree planting.
He encouraged that what was begun at the Secretariat should be replicated in all Dioceses.
