Kukah Centre visits Archbishop Ugorji

The Kukah Centre, which serves as the Secretariat for The National Peace Committee, held a follow-up meeting with the Imo State-based Peace Architecture in Owerri today, 3rd May 2023, to assess the growth and success of the newly-formed peace group.

The team paid a courtesy visit to the Archbishop of Imo State, Most Rev. Lucius Ugorji, who expressed his gratitude to the Kukah Centre for their work in promoting peace across Nigeria and commended the founder Bishop Kukah for his unique message of peace.

The National Peace Committee formed the Imo State Peace Committee as an independent body with support from the Swiss Embassy to address issues related to peace in the state, particularly the peaceful conduct of electoral bodies, participants, stakeholders, and law enforcement agencies.

The committee chairman thanked The Kukah Centre team for the meeting and expressed appreciation to the NPC. He emphasized the need for training and capacity development for the team, which had been provided by the NPC, to enhance their future engagements and enable them to cascade the training within the state.

The IMPA (Imo State Peace Committee) expressed concerns about the upcoming Imo State Governorship elections and outlined their strategic plans to tackle potential issues, using the National Peace Committee’s interventions at the national level as a template for instilling the values of peace among all participants.

They also pledged their neutrality and non-partisan nature in election participation. They outlined their plans for visits to key stakeholders, the establishment of an Imo State Peace Accord, and roundtable discussions with political parties.

The IMPA’s efforts toward ensuring a peaceful Imo State are commendable, and we call on the people of Imo to support them in their quest for peace. We believe that only through collective action can we achieve lasting peace.
