In an exclusive chat with CSN Media at the ongoing first 2024 plenary assembly of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) in Abuja, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Katsina, Most Rev. Gerald Mamman Musa disclosed that holistic evangelisation that involves the enlightenment of the people, both in terms of functional education and spiritual formation will remain his model of evangelisation in the diocese.
Bishop Musa who is the first Bishop of the newly erected diocese of Katsina, described the diocese as a creative minority that makes up about just 0.2% of people as a diocese. He however expressed optimism that there is a high level of prospects for the new diocese in the area of vocation.
“We see ourselves as a minority in terms of population. We are about 0.2% of the population of people as a diocese. That in itself is a challenge, and it means that we have the opportunity to be a creative minority. There are prospects in the diocese of Katsina in terms of vocation, it may be coming very slow, but we still have vocations coming up. The biggest prospect this year is that we have 5 deacons who are going to be ordained priests later in July this year.”
Bishop Musa who is among the four new Bishops in the conference, noted that it is a rare privilege for him to sit with distinguished Bishops of the conference, from different parts of the country to learn from their expertise and experience. He described the conference as a mini-Nigeria, considering the presence of Bishops from every parts of the country and revealed that this plenary being the first for him as a bishop, is an opportunity for him to listen and observe.
Katsina Diocese was carved out of Sokoto Diocese by the Holy See. Upon its canonical erection, Bishop Gerald Mamman Musa was ordained and installed as its first Bishop on Tuesday, December 12, 2023.
