Bishop Dugu Grants Scholarships to 250 Children in IDP Camps

By Emmanuel Eko, CSN

The Catholic Bishop of Katsina-Ala Diocese, Most Rev. Isaac Bundepuun Dugu has built a primary school and offered full Scholarship to over 250 children for the internally displaced children living in camp located in Ugba, Logo LGA of Benue State.

The Chief Shepherd said the aim of this compassionate effort is to uplift, support vulnerable children and to provide educational opportunities for children whose lives have been disrupted by violent conflicts in the region.

Bishop Dugu emphasized the Churchโ€™s role in ensuring that displaced children, many of whom have been forced to flee their homes due to ongoing crises, are not denied access to education. โ€œOur mission is not only spiritual but also humanitarian,โ€ the Bishop stated. โ€œEducation is the foundation upon which a better future is built, and we must ensure that these children, despite their challenging circumstances, have the opportunity to learn and grow.โ€

The scholarship program, which will cover tuition, uniforms, and educational materials, is expected to benefit hundreds of children from the various IDP camps in and around Katsina-Ala. He highlighted that the initiative was inspired by the Churchโ€™s longstanding commitment to social justice and community development, particularly in times of crisis.

Parents and guardians of the beneficiaries expressed deep gratitude for the support. A mother of three displaced children, remarked, โ€œThis scholarship is a blessing for us. We have been struggling, and now my children can go back to school and have hope for the future.โ€

The initiative comes at a crucial time as the region continues to grapple with security challenges. Many families have been displaced due to farmer-herder conflicts, leaving children without access to consistent schooling. Local officials have praised the diocese for stepping in to fill this critical gap.

The Prelate reaffirmed the Churchโ€™s ongoing efforts to provide food, medical care, and psychological support to those in the IDP camps. He urged both the government and well-meaning individuals to contribute to similar causes, stressing that the collective effort of all sectors of society is necessary to rebuild the affected communities.
