The Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria, Most Rev, Michael Francis Crotty has commended the Catholic Bishops of Nigeria for their dedication to the mission of the Church, urging them to continue fostering unity and evangelisation across the country.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2025 CBCN Second Plenary, held on September 14, 2025, at the Retreat and Youth Development Centre, Nto Ekpu Ikot Nko, Obot Akara, the Nuncio expressed deep admiration for the bishops’ tradition of going round diocese annually in fraternity and collaboration .

“This is my second plenary since arriving in Nigeria as Apostolic Nuncio,” he said. “Bishops of Nigeria, you are to be commended for this custom. I encourage the CBCN to embark on a roadshow of faith, so that more people can encounter the living Christ through your witness.”

The Papal Nuncio stressed that the ultimate mission of the Church remains the salvation of souls, reminding the bishops that “our task is to win more souls for Jesus Christ.”

The Nuncio recalled with solemnity the passing of Pope Francis on Easter Monday, describing it as a moment of deep loss for Catholics worldwide. He noted, however, that the election of Pope Leo XIV has brought renewed hope and leadership to the faithful.

As mark of love and solidarity for the Holy Father, the entire gathering sang a song of birthday wish on his birthday in his honour.

“Today, as Pope Leo XIV celebrates his 70th birthday, we thank God for this milestone,” the Nuncio said. “May the Lord continue to guide him, grant him sound health and long life as he shepherds the Church.”
