CATHOLIC BISHOPS OF AFRICA JOYFULLY WELCOME POPE LEO XIV TO AFRICA

By Fr. Michael Nsikak Umoh

The Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) in a formal welcome message to Pope Leo XIV expressed great joy on the occasion of his first pastoral visit to the continent. The address, signed by Fridolin Cardinal Ambongo, President of SECAM and Archbishop of Kinshasa, describes the visit as a historic moment reflecting the Holy Father’s deep concern for the African people.

The President of SECAM characterises Africa as a “Church-Family of God” and a land of resilience and vibrant spirituality. While acknowledging significant hurdles facing the continent, which includes poverty, bad governance, conflict, corruption, and climate change, the address emphasises that these difficulties are viewed as opportunities for transformation.

Going further, Cardinal Ambongo highlights several key pillars of the African Church which includes the persistent and vibrant faith of local communities; this reality continues to inspire acts of justice and reconciliation.

The prelate expressed joy that the Pope’s visit early in his pontificate shows that Africa is at the heart of his ministry.  The pilgrimage also serves as a call to renew efforts in spreading the Gospel amidst rapidly changing global realities.  The Catholic Bishops express a desire for the visit to spark tangible progress for the poor and marginalised in the continent through new initiatives and collaborations.

Moreover, there is a strong hope that the Pope’s presence will, among other things, strengthen unity among Christians in Africa, foster better dialogue with various religious denominations, inspire efforts toward a continent where individual dignity is upheld and peace flourishes.

Through its President, SECAM reaffirmed unconditional support and spiritual solidarity with the Holy Father, particularly during times of adversity. The Bishops encouraged the Pope to remain steadfast in his mission to speak out for human dignity and keep fostering sincere dialogue between nations. The visit has been entrusted to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Africa.

The SECAM Secretariat is based in Accra, Ghana.
