2023 CBCN PLENARY, ABUJA: Proceedings for Day Two as Femi Falana (SAN) delivers Lecture

The on-going plenary meeting of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) holding at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN) in Abuja, entered its second day on Tuesday 13 February, 2023. The programme for the day commenced with exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Holy Hour Adoration and Benediction. The Holy Mass which followed, and combined with the Lauds (morning prayer of the Church), was celebrated by Most Rev. Yohanna Dauwa Bulus of Kontagora. He also preached at the Mass.

The morning session commenced with a lecture by the fiery lawyer and social activist, Chief Femi Falana, who delivered an electrifying and highly stimulating Paper on the theme of the plenary meeting: ‘Citizens’ participation in good governance in Nigeria.’ The Paper generated a robust and enriching interactive moment at the assembly. The moderator of the session was the Most Rev. Alfred Adewale Martins of Lagos Archdiocese, in his capacity as the CBCN Chairman for Church and Society Department.

After the lecture session, Archbishop Valerian Okeke of Onitsha Archdiocese moderated the section where various leaders of the Clergy and the laity took turns to give their reports. Reports were received from the following National bodies: Nigerian Catholic Diocesan Priests Association (NCDPA) presented by Very Rev. Fr. John Bosco Ezehi; Nigerian Conference of Female Religious presented by Mother Regina Oke, SSMA; Nigerian Conference of Male Religious presented by Rev. Fr. Anthony Kanu, OSA; Catholic Laity Council presented by Hon. Sir Henry Yunkwap; Catholic Women Organisation presented by Dame Mary Asibi Gonsum; Catholic Men Organisation presented by Prince Faith Uche Iwuorisha; Catholic Youth Organisation presented by Mr. Mark Ifeanyi Ugwu; Association of Papal Knights and Medalists of Nigeria presented by Dame Esther Uduehi, KSG; Knight of St. Mulumba presented by Sir Charles Mbelede; Knights of St. John International presented by Major General Remy Uche; Nigeria Police Force Chaplaincy presented by Rev. Fr. CSP. John Gbatsorun; Nigerian Catholic Military Chaplaincy presented by Very Rev. Fr (Air Cdre) PB Kwasau; and the Catholic Chaplaincy of the Nigeria Correctional Service presented by Very Rev. Fr. (DSC) Victor Nyoroh, CM, Esq. The afternoon session began with a closed-door meeting with the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Antonio Guido Filipazzi. Thereafter the general meeting, chaired by the President of Conference, Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji of Owerri Archdiocese, went on as usual with minutes approved and matters arising from therein discussed and actions reported. The deceased bishops, priests, religious and other Church workers were remembered and prayed for.

The day came to a close with the Vespers (Evening prayer of the Church) and a final blessing by His Eminence, Peter Cardinal Ebere Okpaleke of Ekwulobia Diocese.
