The 2024 World Mission Sunday comes up on Sunday, October 20, 2024. The theme for 2024 is: “Go and invite everyone to the banquet.” The Nigerian church takes up the mandatory Mission Sunday Collection on that day.
The World Mission Sunday Collection is mandatory in all Catholic communities worldwide. Catholic parishes, pastoral units, and institutions are expected to take up the collection and remit it in its entirety to the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) of the Propagation of Faith, through their Chanceries or institutions.
The National Director of PMS, Rev. Fr. Solomon Zaku, in an exclusive chat with CSN Media, explained that the mandatory collection is sent to Vatican for supporting missionary work worldwide, and that Nigeria is still a major beneficiary.
“It enables the universal Church to provide essential resources for poor communities, train local clergy, and promote evangelization efforts.”
Fr. Zaku further emphasized that funds realised are utilized for various purposes, including: Building churches, chapels, and community centers in poor communities, establishing new missions and dioceses, training local clergy and catechists, supporting rural health clinics and education initiatives, providing emergency aid to refugees and disaster-stricken areas, amongst others.
“As followers of Christ, we are all missionaries. Our collective support on World Mission Sunday enables us to spread the Gospel and make a tangible difference in the lives of others.”
Therefore, Catholics worldwide are encouraged to give generously during the mission collection, recognizing its importance in advancing the Church’s missionary mandate.
World Mission Sunday is an annual event celebrated on the second-to-last Sunday of October. It was established by Pope Pius XI in 1926 to promote global missionary awareness and support.
