2025 Jubilee Year: Pope Francis to Canonize First Millennial Saint
The Holy Father, Pope Francis announced plans to canonize Blessed Carlo Acutis, a teenage Italian computer programmer, as the Catholic Church’s first millennial saint during the upcoming 2025 Jubilee Year of Hope.
In his message to young people, released on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, Pope Francis encouraged youths to emulate Blessed Carlo’s devotion to the Eucharist, describing it as “the highway to heaven.” Acutis, who died of cancer in 2006 at 15, was renowned for his daily Mass attendance and profound faith in the Eucharist.
As Pope Francis noted, “Blessed Carlo Acutis made praying before the Eucharist his most important daily appointment, which gave him the strength to persevere in his journey of faith.” The Pope added, “I encourage all of you to rediscover the great gift of the Eucharist!”
Earlier this year, Pope Francis approved the second miracle attributed to Acutis’ intercession, paving the way for his canonization. Acutis’ life and faith have inspired countless young people globally.
Pope Francis’ message precedes the next diocesan World Youth Day, scheduled for November 24. The theme, “Those Who Hope in the Lord Will Run and Not Be Weary” (Isaiah 40:31), aligns with the 2025 Jubilee Year’s theme, “Pilgrims of Hope,” emphasizing hope and perseverance amidst adversity.
