The Apostolic Vicariate of Bomadi was carved out of the dioceses of Port Harcourt and Warri comprising the entire Bayelsa State, three Local Government Areas of Delta State and two Local Government Areas of Rivers State. It was created as “mission Sui iuris” (Jurisdiction) in 1991 and placed under the pastoral care of the St. Patrick’s Society Kiltegan, Ireland. It was inaugurated on the 16th of March, 1992 with the Very Revd, Msgr, Thomas V. Greenan as the Ecclesiastical Superior.
After five years of intensive missionary activity which recorded tangible progress, the area was elevated to an Apostolic Vicariate. On the 14″ of May, 1994, the then Very Rev. Msgr. Joseph O. Egerega, a retired Captain of the Nigerian Navy (Late), was ordained Bishop of the area at the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Warri along with John Afareha as Auxiliary Bishop of Warri. Bishop Egerega was installed on the 15″ of May, 1997, as the first Bishop of Bomadi Vicariate, by His Eminence Josef Cardinal Tomko in the presence of His Excellency Carlo Maria Vigano, the then Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria, at Our Lady of the Waters Cathedral, Bomadi.
On assumption of office, Late Bishop Joseph Egerega, despite the serious environmental, financial and other related challenges that he had to surmount made his contribution to the growth, development and progress of the Vicariate.
Most Revd. Dr. Hyacinth Egbebo, MSP on taking over as the Bishop of Vicariate saw that there is still so much to be done. In order for the Vicariate to become a diocese, some basic structures would have to be put in place. With the dream of accomplishing these tasks, Bishop Dr Hyacinth Egbebo, MSP has embarked on some serious developmental projects to move the Vicariate forward.
