A Century of Catholicism in Umuahia

As part of the activities to mark the 100 years of the advent of the Catholic faith which will climax on the 8th day of December, 2021, the Catholic Diocese of Umuahia, Tuesday, held a centenary gala night at Jubilee hall, Mater Dei cathedral, Umuahia, Abia State.

In a brief remark while unveiling Bishop Nwedo’s statue of blessed memory, the Catholic Bishop of Umuahia Diocese, Most Rev. Lucius Ugorji appreciated God for the first Diocesan centenary celebration.

He eulogized the sterling attributes and performance of the pioneer Bishop of Umuahia Diocese, Most Rev Anthony Gogo Nwedo, remarking that he was able to get two unique congregations, the Sons of Mary, Mother of Mercy for the male priests and Daughters of Mary Mother of Mercy, for the Sisters, which he said was the first and only olive gesture in Nigeria.

Speaking also the Archbishop of Owerri, Archbishop Anthony Obinna who x-rayed the Umuahia Diocese’s journey into centenary appreciated the efforts of the Catholic faith, pointing out that the Church is making progress and moving gradually into the communion with God, the saints and angels.

In their respective speeches, the Chairman Diocesan Pastoral Council, Prof. Chris Chinaka and President of Catholic Youth Organisation of Nigeria, Ezinwa Fortune Enyeazu appreciated God for making the centenary celebration a reality.

The event featured vespers (evening worship service); centenary anthem, special performance by the Diocesan choir, drama by the Young Catholic Students and special renditions.
