Today, our hearts are filled with gratitude as we lift our eyes to God in thanksgiving for the gift of Rev. Fr. Eddie Hartnett, SMA, a missionary priest whose life has been quietly, faithfully, and generously poured out for the people of God—especially in the Archdiocese of Lagos where he served for almost fifty remarkable years.
Fr. Hartnett did not simply come as a missionary; he gave his life. He walked with the people, shared in their joys and struggles, prayed with them, taught them, and loved them as his own family in Christ. Through long years of patient service, his hands built churches and institutions, but even more beautifully, they lifted souls, strengthened faith, healed wounds, and inspired hope.
Many generations have been shaped by his priestly presence. Families grew in faith under his pastoral care; vocations were nurtured by his example; communities were strengthened by his quiet dedication. His priesthood speaks not through noise or display, but through endurance, sacrifice, humility, and love—the kind that reflects the heart of Christ the Good Shepherd.
As he now lives in Ireland, distance has not diminished the deep affection and gratitude we hold for him. The seeds he planted continue to bear fruit, and his name remains written not only in parish records, but in the hearts of the people he served.
On this joyful occasion of his 58th anniversary of priestly ordination, we pray that the Lord who called him and sustained him through decades of mission will now surround him with peace, renew his strength, and bless him with good health and serenity of spirit. May he be comforted by the knowledge that his life has truly mattered and that his sacrifices have not been in vain.
May Our Blessed Mother, whom he has served faithfully, keep him close to her heart. And may the Lord grant him the joy of seeing, even now, the abundant fruits of a life given completely to God and His people.
