ADIEU, FRANCIS: THE MIGRANT POPE COMPLETES THE JOURNEY HOME

We honour the life, work and legacy of dearly beloved Holy Father who ended his earthly sojourn today.

As a migrant himself, he embodied the challenging experience of migrants. As Vicar of Christ, he promoted the cause of migrants, refugees, itinerant and vulnerable peoples of all categories. As Pastor of the Universal Church, he brought their plight and ordeal into global focus, urging us to welcome, protect, promote and integrate them. As a compassionate advocate, he called us to accompany them in the fundamental phases of their journey, from their departure, transit, arrival and eventually, return.

The migration apostolate was directly under his personal care and supervision, a ministry he held close to his heart till the end. This ministry has been bequeated to us, to continue the legacy of bringing the bright light of hope to our brothers and sisters on the move.

May we always draw inspiration from the tireless efforts, commitment and dedication of our departed Beloved Holy Father, Francis.

Fr. Augustine Akhogba
Secretary, Migrants and Refugees Unit, Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria
