The Episcopal Chairman for the Department of Church and Society, Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), and Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Alfred Adewale Martins, emphasized the vital role of the department in projecting the Church’s activities to the wider society.
Addressing diocesan directors and coordinators of the various units under the department during their 2024 Annual General Meeting (AGM) via virtual conference, Archbishop Martins stressed, “What you do is what projects the activities of the church to the society. It amplifies the church’s response to issues bothering the society.”
He commended the department’s efforts, and the work they carry out in their various units and at their various jurisdictions, “Well done for the work you do at your various jurisdictions. Recognise that the CBCN takes the activities of the department very vital. God bless you.”
Responding to the Archbishop’s message, the Director of the Department of Church and Society, Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN), Rev. Fr. Uchechukwu Obodoechina, expressed gratitude to Archbishop Martins. “Your grace, we are grateful. So far, we have had robust engagement with one another.”
Fr. Obodoechina also seized the opportunity to solicit the Archbishop’s support, urging him to advocate for the department among his fellow bishops. “Please speak with your brother bishops about the relevance of supporting us at various levels. Without the support of the bishops, we cannot do anything.”
The 2024 AGM with the theme: “Promoting Catholic Social Teaching as Vehicle for Socio-economic and Political Reorientation in Nigeria,” held at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN) in Abuja.
