Bad news from Nigeria: The Prior of Ewu Ishan Monastery shares this update about three kidnapped Benedictine nuns from the monastery of Kogi.
“The latest news, this evening is that the kidnappers called the monastery requested for N20,000,000.00 (twenty million Naira), which is about 33,000.00 Euro (thirty three thousand Euro). The sister pleaded that they do not have that amount, that they are poor and live on charity. So the kidnappers brought removed one million making it 19,000,000.00 Naira. The sisters told them they would give them 100,000.00 Naira (One Hundred Thousand Naira). The kidnappers told them to keep that money for the burial of the three sisters. But after much pleadeing they requested that the sisters should come with what they have today and meet them at a particular spot in the forest.
However, when the sisters got there this morning about 8 a.m. taking with them 300,000.00 Naira (Three Hundred Thousand Naira), they asked them on the phone how much they came with and the sisters said 300,000.00 Naira, and the kidnappers would not listen to them. The sisters pleaded from that time till about 4 p.m. when the kidnappers cut the phone call.
According to the sisters, the three kidnapped are still alive, they heard their voices crying and in terrible agony.
We go on praying, it is a better thing if they are released without any ransome paid, or if any, something very very small. Otherwise, the kidnappers will return or go to some other monasteries/religious communites, since it will then be taken as a lucrative business to go after such people. The Nigerian Catholic Church already said that nothing should be paid as ransome whenever Catholic Priest or Religious are kidnapped. Nonetheless, there were instances in the past where priests have been killed by kidnappers. There were also occasions where they have received money and still killed the person kidnapped. These people can not be predicted, so calling on God to intervene is still the best option. We go on praying.
Once again, thank you and do not relent in prayer. I will let you know when we get any good news.”
