Benue Bloodbath: Catholic Bishops in Nigeria Provide Emergency Assistance, Propose Solidarity Visit to Affected Communities

Barely 15 days after calling for peace and an end to killings in Benue State, the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has once again responded to the renewed spate of deadly violence in the state and other parts of Nigeria. The bishops issued an urgent national appeal, calling for prayer, solidarity, and compassionate action.

In a statement titled โ€œA National Call for Prayer and Solidarityโ€ released on June 19, 2025, the bishops decried the unrelenting violence, describing the killingsโ€”particularly in Benueโ€”as a wound on Nigeriaโ€™s collective conscience. Citing 1 Corinthians 12:26โ€”โ€œIf one member suffers, all suffer togetherโ€โ€”the bishops called on all Catholics and people of goodwill to unite in a spiritual and moral response.

โ€œIt is profoundly heartbreaking that, less than two weeks after our last statement, we must speak out again,โ€ the statement read, referencing their earlier communication on June 6, which condemned the Benue killings and addressed the Mokwa flood disaster. The bishops expressed their hope that these “sorrowful statements” would not become a recurring necessity.

As part of a national response, the bishops confirmed that the CBCN has already provided emergency assistance to some of the hardest-hit communities in Benue. They further promised that a delegation of bishops is preparing to visit these communities in a mission of solidarity and pastoral care.

โ€œTo our suffering brothers and sisters in Benue State and across Nigeria wounded by violence, we assure you that the Church stands with you,โ€ the statement read. It added that the CBCN hopes for a future where such interventions will no longer be needed and prayers will instead rise in gratitude for peace.

In the message signed by the CBCN President, Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, and Secretary, Most Rev. Donatus Aihmiosion Ogun, OSA, the bishops announced a Nine-Day Prayer initiative, beginning on Saturday, June 21, and concluding on Saturday, June 29, the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul.

The daily observance, according to the press statement, will involve the recitation of the Rosary and the โ€œPrayer for Nigeria in Distress.โ€ On the final day, a Holy Mass will be offered in all dioceses and parishes across the country, dedicated to peace and healing in Nigeria, for the repose of the victims, comfort for their families, divine protection for citizens, and the conversion of those responsible for the violence.
