As the Catholic Diocese of Ilorin bid farewell to its beloved Emeritus Bishop, Most Rev. Ayo-Maria Atoyebi, OP, during a funeral Mass held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cathedral, Ilorin, on 28 March, 2025, a flood of tributes poured in from all quarters for the saintly bishop.
Bishop Anselm Pendo Lawani of Ilorin Diocese delivered a heartfelt eulogy, paying tribute to Bishop Ayo-Maria’s remarkable life and service to the Church. He remembered Bishop Ayo-Maria as a humble and simple servant who dedicated his life to the Lord and the Church.
The new bishop of Ilorin diocese highlighted Bishop Ayo-Maria’s achievements during his 27-year tenure as the chief shepherd of Ilorin Diocese, noting how he established new parishes, schools, clinics, and hospitals, and worked tirelessly to promote the growth of the Church in Ilorin.
The prelate also recalled Bishop Ayo-Maria’s enduring commitment to service and sanctity of life, even in retirement. Despite his health challenges, he remained devoted to his faith and continued to serve the Church until his passing on 8 March, 2025.
Bishop Lawani expressed gratitude to the Dominican Friars for their care and support of Bishop Ayo-Maria in his retirement. He also thanked the medical personnel, security agents, and all those who contributed to the success of the funeral ceremonies.
In conclusion, Bishop Lawani urged the faithful to celebrate Bishop Ayo-Maria’s resurrected life in Christian faith and hope. “We have lost a good and dedicated shepherd,” he said, “but we have also gained him. We have gained him because among the hosts of heaven, the communion of saints, we now have one who also pleads our cause.”
The funeral Mass was attended by dignitaries, including bishops, priests, religious, and lay faithful from across the country.
