The Catholic Bishops of Nigeria held their first plenary conference online today, Tuesday 23 February, 2021, with 52 Bishops in attendance including John Cardinal Onaiyekan, the President of Conference, Archbishop Augustine Obiora Akubeze, and the Papal Nuncio, Archbishop Antonio Filipazzi. The Secretary General of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN), Very Rev. Fr. Zacharia Nyantiso Samjumi was also present with five Directors of the different CSN units.
Ordinarily, the conference would have been the first for the year and would have lasted about 7 days at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria. The Bishops had to resolve to a virtual meeting in order to observe the COVID-19 protocol, thereby leading by example.
During the meeting, the Papal Nuncio, brought greetings from the Holy Father, while the Bishops discussed many issues pertaining to the life of the Church and the good of the society. Like good shepherds, they also expressed great concern about the sorry state of the nation and the hardship experienced by the people. Find here below the text of the message to all Nigerians as they call for positive action by all concerned to save Nigeria from the brink of collapse. Please read and share your comments.
Padre Mike Nsikak Umoh, CSN.
