Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria hosts Inaugural National Bible Quiz Contest

The Department of Pastoral Affairs, through the religious education, catechesis, and biblical apostolate unit, in collaboration with the department of Mission and Dialogue of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN), is set to host the grand finale of the first-ever National Catholic Bible Quiz Competition on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at the CSN Resource Centre in Abuja. The theme of the competition is “Remain in my word” (Jn 8:31)”.

The competition, which began at the parish level and progressed to the deanery, diocesan, and provincial levels, will feature contestants from the 9 ecclesiastical provinces in Nigeria vying for the top spot. His Eminence, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, will deliver the keynote address, and other dignitaries and guests from the church and state will be in attendance.

In an exclusive interview with CSN Media, Mr. Femi Emmanuel Adeojo, Head of the religious education, catechesis, and biblical apostolate unit, revealed that the initiative was inspired by the Christian Association of Nigeria’s (CAN) national Bible quiz, in which CSN participated last year. He emphasized that the goal of this event is twofold: to demonstrate Catholics’ knowledge of scripture and its application in their daily life and to celebrate God’s word as biblical apostles.

“This event has two dimensions of celebration,” Mr. Adeojo explained. “First, it demonstrates our knowledge of scripture as Catholics, which is essential for our faith. Second, it celebrates God’s word, which is a fundamental aspect of our worship, belief, and expression of faith in society.”

Mr Adeojo further disclosed that the unit is also planning a more ecumenically fashioned edition of the programme later this year, which will include other Christian denominations in Nigeria. He added that the ultimate goal is to place the word of God at the centre of the life of every Christian.
