The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has suspended all physical national youth activities, effectively putting on hold the 2026 National Youth Day (NYD) scheduled to take place in Jos, Plateau State.
The decision was communicated in an official circular dated July 9, 2026, signed by the National Youth Animator of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Rev. Fr. Boniface Idoko, on behalf of the Bishop Chairman for the youth, Most Rev. Michael Ukpong.
According to the circular, the suspension stems from a careful review of the current security challenges in the country. The document states:
“Having carefully reviewed the prevailing security situation across our country and in the interest of safeguarding the lives and well-being of our young people, the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria has resolved that all physical national youth activities be suspended forthwith until further notice.”
As a result of this directive, the highly anticipated National Youth Day (NYD) Jos 2026 “has been placed on hold until further directives.” National youth organisations and bodies, including CYON, NFCS, NACC, and YCSN, have been advised to limit their activities to the Provincial and Diocesan levels while maintaining strict security precautions.
The leadership acknowledged the heavy impact of this cancellation, noting the “enormous sacrifices, painstaking preparations, and generous commitments” already made by the Archdiocese of Jos, the local organizing committees, volunteers, and benefactors.
“We deeply regret the disappointment and immense inconveniences this decision may occasion. Nevertheless, considering the overriding importance of the safety of all participants, we humbly appeal for your understanding,” the statement reads.
Despite the blanket suspension on gatherings, the CBCN clarified that the spiritual journey preceding the event will not stop entirely. The circular noted that “the pilgrimage of the NYD Cross and the Icon of Our Lady should continue as scheduled until they reach the Archdiocese of Jos,” urging receiving communities to use the opportunity for prayer.
The circular concluded with a call to Catholic youths across Nigeria to remain steadfast in praying for peace, security, and national healing.
