The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Most Rev. Ignatius Ayau Kaigama, has charged Catholic artistes and entertainers to counter anti-Catholic narratives in the entertainment space with their artistic productions. He made this call during the Opening Mass for the National Summit and Leadership Training of the Catholic Artistes and Entertainers Association of Nigeria (CAEAN), held at DRACC, Aco Estate, Lugbe, Abuja on Friday, March 28, 2025.
In his homily at the Mass, Archbishop Kaigama noted that Catholic artistes and entertainers have a crucial role to play in propagating the faith of the Church with their talents. “Most contents online are used to ridicule the Church, the Pope, and our sacraments, but it is your place to correct this,” he said.
The Archbishop encouraged the Catholic creatives to use the doctrines of the Church to defend the faith in their media texts. “You have a duty to do something in protecting the Catholic faith and identity. Teach your faith in your media texts and strive to know your faith in-depth.”
Archbishop Kaigama also warned against impersonation, urging the artistes and entertainers to be critical and aware of those who pretend to be Catholics but undermine the faith. “In your drama and videos, do not focus only on the humanity of the Church. Many movie producers use the Catholic vestments in their movies to demonstrate things that are totally contrary to the norms of the Church to ridicule the faith.”
In her remarks, the CAEAN National President, Ambassador Edith Isidahomen, thanked Archbishop Kaigama for hosting the summit. She noted that CAEAN was founded by Bishop Emmanuel Badejo of Oyo Diocese in 2000 to propagate the Gospel through acting and entertainment.
The summit, which brought together representatives from over 20 dioceses across Nigeria, aims to equip Catholic artistes and entertainers with the skills and knowledge necessary to promote the Catholic faith and values through their talents.
