On December 27, 1995, the Feast of St John the Evangelist, the Holy
Father, Pope John Paul II, announced the creation of a new Prefecture in Nigeria, namely, the Apostolic Prefecture of Kontagora. Msgr Timothy J.
Carroll SMA was installed as Apostolic Prefect on March 16, 1996 at Kontagora by His Excellency, Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, the then Pro-Nuncio to Nigeria.
The Prefecture of Kontagora was carved out of three existing dioceses, namely, Minna, Ilorin and Sokoto. The size of the area is about 46,000 sq km. The main ethnic grpups in the area are .Kamberi, Dakakari, Dukawaj (amuku, Gungawa, Fulani, Hausa, and a number of other smaller groups.

(Bishop Emeritus) Date of Birth: April 23, 1940 Priestly Ordination: December 20, 1965 Episcopal Ordination: August 17, 2002It was entrusted to the care of the Society of African Missions, SMA and St. Patrick’ Fathers SPS. The first missionaries (SMA Fathers) came to the area around 1937. They first settled at Masuga and opened a mission at Zuru. On 21st May 2002, the Holy Father announced the elevation of the Prefective of Kontagora to Apostolic Vicariate of Kontagora.
The erection of the new Vicariate Apostolic took place on 17th August 2002. Rt Rev. Msgr Timothy J. Caroll SMA was ordained Bishop and appointed the Vicar Apostolic and first Bishop of Kontagora Vicariate on the same day.
On appointed on 2nd Feb, 2012 Most Rev. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna was installed as the first indigenous Bishop of the Vicariate, following his appointment by the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI. Presently, there are twelve parishes and hundreds of outstations in the Vicariate. There are seven Convents, five Catholic Nursery/Primary Schools, two Secondary Schools, a Leadership training Centre for the training of Lay Readers and Catechists, and three Primary Health Clinic Centres.
