The Diocese of Otukpo like most dioceses in Nigeria has a very eventful and
long history. The history is divided into three parts: the advent of Catholicism in Idomaland, the making of Otukpo Diocese and Otukpo as a diocese.
Catholicism in the area called Otukpo Diocese is traceable to the first quarter of the 20th century. The extension work on the railway line, North of Enugu which began in 1922 contributed greatly to the beginning and the spread of Catholicism in Idomaland. Many railway workers working on the extension programme were Catholics. To keep their faith, they needed pastoral attention. As a result, they invited the priests at St. Paul’s Parish, Obollo Eke. Between 1922 and 1924, Fr.
Marcel Grandin Cssp, the parish priest and his assistant, Fr. Vincent Davey Cssp, of Eke Parish considered the plight of the Catholics at the railway camp within Idomaland and responded to the invitation promptly. In 1925, Under Fr. Davey, a teacher and a catechist were sent to assist the Catholic community at Utonkon.
On 4th October, 1930, approval was given for the building of a Catholic Church at Igumale. By 1930, the apostolate of the Catholic missionaries in Idomaland was controlled by the Onitsha Vicariate. For effective organization, in that same year, Bishop Joseph Shanahan gave the Benue Province of the Vicariate which comprised of Makurdi, Lafia, Jalingo, Part of Yola, Idah and Otukpo dioceses to the German Holy Ghost Fathers to look after.

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DIOCESE
OTUKPO DIOCESE
Province: Abuja Erection: October 28, 1995In July 1934, the Onitsha-Owerri Vicariates were split into three. Two prefectures were carved out, the Prefectures of Calabar and Benue.
The Prefecture of Benue was made up of the land of Idoma, Igala, Tiv, Jukun and Yola. Makurdi became the center of ecclesiastical administration of the Prefecture. Monsignor Winterle was named Prefect Apostolic of the Prefecture. In 1956, Udei, Nassarawa, Keffi, and Lafia were merged to Otukpo Prefecture. In 1936, the seat of the Prefecture was moved to Otukpo by Monsignor Kirsten, who succeeded Monsignor Winterle as Prefect Apostolic.
In 1959, the prefecture of Otukpo was raised to the statue of a diocese.
Monsignor James Hagan was consecrated its first Bishop in 1961. In 1962, the seat of the diocese was transferred to Makurdi and renamed Makurdi Diocese. Between 1968 and 1989, the late Bishop J. Murray was Bishop of the diocese. He was succeeded by Bishop Athanasius A.

On 18th July, 1995, the decree creating Otukpo Diocese out of Makurdi was promulgated by His Holiness, Pope John Paul II of blessed memory, with the late Monsignor Fidelis Orgah as the Bishop elect. The diocese was canonically erected on 28th October, 1995. Her first Bishop was consecrated and installed that same day.
The first Bishop of the diocese, Rt.
Rev. Dr. Fidelis Orgah passed away on 7th December, 2000. Very Rev. Fr.
Samuel Ehaitikpo, a priest of the diocese was chosen by the diocesan College of Consultors on 12th December, 2000, as the Diocesan Administrator. He was Diocesan Administrator for over two years. On 17th December, 2002, the second indigenous Bishop of the diocese, Monsignor Michael Ekwoyi Apochi was appointed. He was consecrated and installed Bishop on 23rd February, 2003. The Church in Otukpo Diocese has made great strides in spiritual and pastoral life under the dynamic leadership of our local ordinary with the cooperation and collaboration of the faithful.
