he history of what is today Shendam Diocese started on February 12, 1907

when three pioneer members of the Society of African Missions (SMA) Fathers, Oswald Waller, Joseph Mauren and Ernest Belin arrived in Shendam to open a new mission territory. They were warmly received by the then Long Goemai of Shendam, Dongkwap I. Upon seeing their simplicity and humility in the way they participated in the life of his people – farming, hunting, building and learning the local language, he gave them all the cooperation and support needed.
These three missionaries were later joined by others and their efforts of four years bore fruits with the elevation of Shendam mission to a “Prefecture Apostolic” in 1911 with Msgr. Oswald Waller as its Superior. In 1922, the jurisdiction was enlarged to include the old Provinces of Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Niger, Zaria, Northern Benue, Adamawa and Borno. The headquarters was moved to Kano and renamed the “Prefecture Apostolic of Northern Nigeria,” still headed by Msgr.
Waller. Shendam remained a major mission headquarter with some priests left there.
In 1934, the “Prefecture Apostolic of Northern Nigeria” was divided into two distinct Prefectures of Jos and Kaduna. Shendam fell within the Prefecture of Jos under Msgr. William Lumley, SMA. There were only 8 priests who were joined by more SMA priests and later by the Augustinian Fathers. The prefecture of Yola was carved out in 1950 and Maiduguri Prefecture in 1953.

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DIOCESE
SHENDAM DIOCESE
Province: Jos Erection: July 28, 2007In 1953, the Prefecture of Jos was elevated to the status of a diocese with the appointment of Rev. Fr. John Reddington, an Irish SMA missionary working in Ibadan as the first bishop of Jos. Bishop Reddington encouraged local vocations which saw Frs. Peter Jatau, Gabriel Ganaka and Kevin Aje among the pioneer indigenous priests and Srs. Mary Patrick Dimlong (OLF) and Martin de Porres Damen (OLF) among the indigenous pioneer sisters joining the work force in the Lord’s vineyard.
The Diocese of Jos later became an Archdiocese in 1994 under the Most Rev. Dr. Gabriel Gonsum Ganaka (of blessed memory), who took over from Bishop John Reddington (of blessed memory) in 1975. Archbishop Ganaka had divided the Archdiocese of Jos into six deaneries (Kafanchan, Bauchi, Pankshin, Bukuru, Shendam and Jos).
In 1995 Kafanchan deanery, together with some parts of Kaduna Archdiocese became a Diocese; and Lafia followed in 1996, taking two parishes: Akwanga and Nassarawa Eggon from Jos. Bauchi Deanery too became an Apostolic Vicariate in 1996 and a diocese in 2005. The Archdiocese of Jos was left with four deaneries: Shendam, Pankshin, Bukuru and Jos. Archbishop Ganaka died in 1999, leaving the Archdiocese in the hands of an Apostolic Administrator, Msgr. Emmanuel Udeh until 2000.
The Holy Father created the diocese of Shendam on June 2, 2007 and Bishop James Daman OSA (of Blessed Memory) of Jalingo Diocese was
named the pioneer bishop. The diocese covers the following Local Governments Areas in Plateau State: Wase, Langtang North, Langtang South, Mikang, Shendam, Quaan Pan – (Southern geo-political zone of the state). The diocese was erected and the first bishop installed on July 28, 2007 at Shendam. However, following the death of Bishop Daman, OSA; Very Rev. Fr. Raymond Gofut was appointed the Adminstrator of the diocese, pending the appointment of a new local ordinary by the Holy Father.
