Following the passing of the Metropolitan Archbishop of Benin City and former President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, on July 9, 2026, a thoughtful wave of spiritual solidarity has united the Catholic faithful globally. In a massive, coordinated effort, initiated by the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN), to intercede for the repose of his soul, an online spiritual bouquet has amassed hundreds of prayer pledges and Holy Mass offerings in less than a week, exemplifying the living reality of the Communion of Saints.
Data captured between July 12 and July 18, 2026, reveals that 181 individual submittals have already generated an extraordinary treasury of grace, totalling more than 326 Holy Masses explicitly offered for the late prelate, alongside thousands of private devotions.
For Catholics, a spiritual bouquet is not a mere sentimental gesture, but a profound act of supernatural charity rooted deeply in Sacred Scripture and Church Tradition. The foundational scriptural basis for offering prayers and sacrifices for the deceased is found in the Second Book of Maccabees:
“Turning to supplication, they prayed that the sinful deed might be fully blotted out… Thus he made atonement for the dead that they might be absolved from their sin” (2 Maccabees 12:42, 46).
By offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the highest form of prayer wherein Christ’s own sacrifice on Calvary is made present, and stacking it with personal devotions, the faithful are actively assisting Archbishop Akubeze on his final journey toward the beatific vision. In the Catholic understanding, physical death does not break the bond of love; rather, through the Communion of Saints, the prayers of the living can directly aid the dead who may be undergoing final purification.
The data reveals a meticulously structured campaign of spiritual warfare and intercession. The spiritual bouquet is uniquely balanced between the highest liturgical prayer of the Church and grassroots devotional piety. The commitment to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is led by 41 individuals pledging the robust offering of 5 Holy Masses each. Scores of others have pledged clusters of 3, 2, or single Masses, driving the current definitive total past 326 Masses.
Besides the Masses, over 85% of all participants have bound themselves to regular recitation of the Rosary. Pledges range from short, focused blocks (One Our Father, 3 or 10 Hail Marys, a Glory Be, and a Memorare) to entire Mysteries of the Rosary. This brings to a total of 2,910 Hail Marys, 352 Our Fathers, 352 Glory Bes, and 132 Memorares.
Recognising the power of silent contemplation before the Blessed Sacrament, 53 participants have specifically pledged individual slots of at least a 5-minute Eucharistic Adoration on behalf of the late Archbishop.
The demographic footprint of the dataset reads like a cross-section of the universal Church, showcasing the wide-reaching impact of Archbishop Akubeze’s pastoral ministry. A vast portion of the bouquet has been cultivated by the clergy and religious congregations who worked directly under or alongside him. Notable institutional blocks include the Sisters of the Sacred Heart (SSH) whose members turned out in overwhelming numbers, along with the Handmaids of the Holy Child Jesus (HHCJ), OLA Sisters, the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus (EHJ) and Daughters of Divine Love (DDL). The data also bears the signatures of multiple Catholic priests, monastic orders (such as the St. Benedict Monastery in Ewu), and members of the episcopacy, notably Most Rev. Godfrey Igwebuike Onah of Nsukka Diocese.
While the historic heart of the response centers around the Archdiocese of Benin City and the administrative hub of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN) in Abuja, as expected, the geographic span is truly international. Intercessory entries flooded the database from every corner of Nigeria (Lagos, Rivers, Delta, Imo, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, and Oyo) and across oceans, with participants logging in from the United States, the United Kingdom, Rome, France, Switzerland, and Equatorial Guinea.
The spiritual bouquet remains an open, living testament of faith, but the window to participate is drawing to a close. The organising committee has set a firm deadline of Friday, July 31, 2026, for all submissions.
Every single Mass, every decade of the Rosary, and every moment spent before the Blessed Sacrament counts.
