“Guard against every form of laziness,” Bishop Daboh charges Ibianefe parishioners

By Fidelia Angbalaga, CSN

The Catholic Bishop of Zaria, Most Rev. Habilah Daboh has charged lay faithful to guard against every form of laziness, and, instead, embrace hard work as a core Christian value.

Bishop Daboh gave this admonition in his homily on August 27, 2024 at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Ibienafe, during a parish visitation as a representative of the conference of bishops. It will be recalled that this event is a usual part of the activities of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) whenever it holds its plenary meeting in any diocese.

The preacher emphasised the biblical principle that diligence and dedication are essential not only for personal growth but also for the advancement of the community and the nation at large.

Drawing on scriptural references, Bishop Daboh highlighted the importance of industriousness in fulfilling God’s purpose for humanity. He reminded the congregation that laziness is a vice that can lead to both spiritual and material poverty, and that every individual has a responsibility to contribute positively to society.

“Laziness is a thief of time and distorts potential; those who do not work, should not eat,” Bishop Daboh stated, “God has given each of us talents and opportunities, and it is our duty to use them wisely. We must not sit idly by and wait for miracles when God has equipped us with the strength and resources to act.”

The Cleric’s message resonated deeply with many in attendance, particularly in light of the challenges facing Nigeria. He pointed out that the nation’s economic development depends on the collective effort of its citizens and urged the faithful to take their roles seriously in building a prosperous future.

Bishop Daboh also took the opportunity to encourage young people to stay focused on their education and vocational training, stressing that the future of the country lies in their hands. He called on parents to instil strong work ethics in their children from an early age, warning that a culture of laziness can quickly become entrenched if not addressed.

In his closing remarks, the Bishop prayed for divine strength and guidance for all those struggling with laziness and urged the congregation to support one another in their endeavours to lead productive lives.

The Chief Celebrant at the Mass was His Eminence, John Cardinal Onaiyekan. The Liturgical celebration was concluded with a palpable sense of renewed energy and determination among the parishioners to heed the Bishop’s call and work diligently for the betterment of themselves and their communities.
