Preamble.
I bring you greetings from the Episcopal Chairman for the youth, Most Rev Patrick Eluke and the Secretary General of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Rev Fr Michael Banjo. I feel very delighted to be among you for this epoch-making event, a convention filled with lots and lots. I am excited. May God grant us the grace to have a very successful Convention
Heralds of Hope: Empowering Catholic Students as Vessels of Transformation
In a world often overshadowed by conflict, poverty, and despair, the call to be “Heralds of Hope” resonates profoundly. As members of the Nigeria Federation of Catholic Students (NFCS), you are entrusted with the mission to be beacons of hope, reflecting the light of Christ in your communities and beyond.ย
Understanding Christian Hope
Christian hope is not mere optimism or wishful thinking; it is a theological virtue, a gift from God that empowers believers to trust in His promises and act in faith. Pope Francis, in his message for the Jubilee of 2025, emphasizes that hope is both a gift and a task for every Christian. โHope is a gift because it is God who offers it to us… To hope is to welcome this gift that God offers us every day.โย This hope is rooted in the resurrection of Christ, which assures us that no defeat or death is final. It calls us to live with patience and perseverance, even amidst challenges. As Pope Francis notes, hope is the virtue of the young at heart, enabling us to see beyond present difficulties to the salvation prepared by God.ย ย
Hope in the Context of Nigeria
Nigeria faces numerous challenges, including political instability, economic hardship, and social injustice. In such a context, the hope of the poor becomes a powerful witness. Pope Francis highlights that the poor, despite their suffering, possess a hope that defies circumstances. โThe hope of the poor defies deadly situations… they live in the certainty that it will be fully restored to them by God himself.โย
As Catholic students, you are called to stand in solidarity with the marginalized, offering not only material assistance but also the hope that comes from the Gospel.
Being Heralds of Hope
To be effective heralds of hope, Catholic students must embody the following principles:
1. Witnessing through Action.ย Engage in acts of charity, justice, and peace that reflect the love of Christ.
2. Promoting Social Justice.ย Advocate for policies and practices that uphold the dignity of every person, especially the poor and oppressed.
3. Fostering Reconciliation. Work towards healing divisions within society, promoting understanding and unity.
4. Living Authentic Faith.ย Demonstrate integrity and commitment to the teachings of the Church in all aspects of life.
Pope Francis encourages young people to be โweavers of goodness,โ patiently working towards a better future, even when faced with adversity.ย ย
Conclusion
As members of the NFCS, you are uniquely positioned to be agents of transformation in Nigeria. By embracing the hope offered through Christ and living it out in your daily lives, you can inspire others and contribute to building a more just and compassionate society. Remember, hope is not passive; it is active and transformative. May you continue to be faithful heralds of hope, lighting the way for others to follow.
