‘LISTEN TO HIM’: FAITH VS SCIENCE (CATECHESIS FOR THE 2ND SUNDAY OF LENT (B)

Dearest friends, at the *TRANSFIGURATION* scene, we have an affirmation of the person of Jesus Christ from God the Father and an invitation to always *‘LISTEN TO HIM’* (cf. Mk 9:2-10).

Now, *‘LISTENING TO HIM’* involves OBEDIENCE to his WORDS. Obedience flows from and is rooted in *FAITH.* Thus, obedience to the Gospel TRUTHS requires FAITH which assures us that God, from whom these TRUTHS emanate from can NEVER deceive us (cf. CCC n. 156). Thus, the *CERTAINTY* of the Truths of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ supersedes Truths of Scientific Innovations and of course, every other human originated ideas. The Catechism beautifully captures the above thus: *“FAITH is CERTAIN. It is more certain than all human knowledge because it is founded on the very WORD of GOD who cannot LIE. To be sure, revealed truths can seem obscure to human reason and experience, but “the certainty that the divine light gives is GREATER than that which the light of natural reason gives”* (cf. CCC n. 157). Again, let us not forget that ‘Jesus Christ remains the WAY, the TRUTH and the LIFE’; and without following and Listening to him, we cannot make any meaningful headway (cf. Jn 14:6).

Therefore, beloved friends, in the face of too many scientific innovations which have characterized our world today, let us not fail to always weigh what science offers with the Truths of the Gospel message of our Lord Jesus Christ. Whenever there is a contradiction, let us choose to LISTEN to Jesus than to that MORALLY QUESTIONABLE Scientific innovation. After all, every true scientific innovation would not contradict the Gospel Truths (cf. CCC n. 159) because God is the origin of every good gifts (cf. James 1:17). Indeed, it is *SAFER,* no matter the difficulty, to always LISTEN TO GOD than to follow scientific innovations that are MORALLY questionable (cf. Acts 5:29). An example that quickly comes to mind here is the widespread *IN VITRO FERTILIZATION (IVF)* during which many embryos are destroyed.

May the Blessed Virgin Mary always support us with her powerful intercession. Amen🙏🏼
