The Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria, CLCN now has a new leader. He is Hon. Sir Henry Hoomlong Yunkwap (KSJI) from the Province of Jos who until his election was the Secretary General of the body.
His emergence took place at Lafia Diocese during the annual conference of the CLCN.
In an interview with The Word of Life newspaper, a publication of the Catholic Archdiocese of Jos, Sir Yunkwap maintained that he was humbled with the new responsibility saying he would do everything with the help of God to justify the confidence reposed in him by the Church. He noted that revitalization and strengthening of the Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria in the Nine Provinces that make up the Catholic Church in Nigeria would remain the top most priority of his administration.
โMost importantly, I will collaborate, interpret and implement the vision of the Fathers of the Church to bring evangelization of the community, society and the world through dialogue for the improvement of the Nigerian Stateโ he noted.
Sir Yunkwap who hails from Shendam LGA, Plateau State and a former member of the State House of Assembly said he would put all necessary machineries in place to foster Christian unity irrespective of denomination through ecumenism stressing that what the Church in Nigeria needed now is unity of purpose. He said he would pursue vigorously the collaboration of the Bishops and Priests to achieve that.
The new leader while commenting on the economic hardship in the nation noted that โInstead of depending on the support and contributions of the Dioceses and individuals, I will work to initiate and probably establish viable business with the aim of raising funds for the operation of the Council and other projects especially the Sancta Maria and other Projects of the Laity Council and the completion and smooth running of the Veritas University and other Catholic Institutions in Nigeriaโ
Sir Yunkwap who was born on April 14, 1963 at Luโu-Nuwang (Gidan Galadima) and Goemai by tribe maintained that since the main function of the CLCN is to support the Catholic Bishop Conference of Nigeria, CBCN and Clergy generally to build the body of Christ, his administration would not relent until that is fully achieved.
Sir Henry Yunkwap is a Masterโs Degree holder in Leadership and Discipline and Bachelorโs of Arts Education from the university of Abuja and Jos respectively. He also holds an NCE certificate from the College of Education, Yola
He is a seasoned business man and politician who has served his people in various capacities starting from his ward as a councilor and to the State House Of Assembly representing his Shendam constituency. He was one time Majority Leader of the house from 2016 โ 2018. He was President, Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria Shendam Diocese 2014-2017, Jos Provincial President, Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria 2016-2018 and the pioneer Worthy President Commandery 689, Shendam 2012-2018,
The new president has traveled far and near and a recipient of many merit awards among is the ICON of Empowerment from the Faculty of MED Sciences UNIJOS, anti โ Corruption Ambassador by Foundation for Transparency & Accountability, African Union, award of Honour by the Catholic Law Students Association of Nigeria (CALSAN), award of exemplary Leadership by National Association of Plateau State Students NAPSS, FCE Pankshin and that of the True Representative of the Peopleโs Award by National Association of Political Science Students (NAPSS), University of Jos Chapter.
He loves singing, travelling, reading and watching football
