He led the congregation in prayer for the celebrant, reflecting on his profound impact within the diocese.
Prayer for Pope Francis: The Bishop also acknowledged the Churchโs current state of mourning following the passing of Pope Francis. This heartfelt introduction set the tone for a celebration filled with gratitude, reflection, and community spirit, honoring the legacy of a beloved priest.
In his practical homily titled “The Power of Influence: How One Life Can Have a Profound Impact on the Lives of Others,” Fr. Cornelius Obe celebrated the extraordinary legacy of Msgr. Donatus Ogudo, reflecting on his profound commitment to the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka.
Fr. Obe described Msgr. Ogudo as a true missionary who, despite his roots in Imo state and incardination in Enugu diocese, chose to remain in Nsukka to nurture and build the fledgling diocese. He embraced the local culture wholeheartedly, making Nsukka his home and becoming a beloved figure in the community.
As the first liturgist of the diocese, Msgr. Ogudo has significantly shaped the liturgical practices that define the spiritual life of the community. Fr. Obe highlighted his spirit of charity and welcoming nature, stating, “Looking at him, you see priesthood.”
Reflecting on his personal experiences, Fr. Obe recounted how Msgr. Ogudo extended respect and support to him upon his ordination, embodying the qualities of a true mentor. He shared a powerful story that exemplified Msgr. Ogudo’s selflessness: during a late-night emergency at Amufie Parish, a pregnant woman required urgent medical attention. When she cried out for help, Fr. Ogudo sprang into action, rushing her to the hospital in his own car. In a remarkable act of compassion, he even donated his blood to save both the woman and her baby.
Fr. Cornelius Obe continued to illuminate the remarkable qualities of Msgr. Donatus Ogudo, emphasizing his profound concern for the marginalized and his tireless efforts against the subjugation of women. “For 50 years, he has been a beacon of light to the world and a salt to the earth,” Fr. Obe declared, highlighting how Msgr. Ogudo embodies the essence of priesthood through his unwavering commitment and compassion.
Fr. Obe noted the visible inner joy and peace that radiate from Msgr. Ogudo, prompting him to inquire about the secret to his youthful spirit despite advancing age. The answer was simple yet profound: “His contentment and selflessness as a priest,” he revealed, underscoring how these virtues have kept Msgr. Ogudo vibrant and engaged.
Reflecting on his own journey, Fr. Obe shared his initial expectation of being handed the secrets of priesthood upon ordination. However, he came to realize that true wisdom comes from the discipline and understanding cultivated over years of experience. He acknowledged the invaluable insights that Msgr. Ogudo and Fr. Sylvester Eze possess, recognizing that their lived experiences offer a rich tapestry of guidance for younger priests.
Through Fr. Obeโs words, the congregation was reminded of the enduring impact of dedicated priests like Msgr. Ogudo, whose legacy of advocacy, joy, and selflessness continues to inspire and uplift the community.

Obe continued his heartfelt reflection by posing a critical question to the congregation: “How are we appreciating and listening to these elderly priests before they leave us?” He emphasized the importance of honoring and valuing the wisdom of seasoned priests like Msgr. Donatus Ogudo, who have dedicated their lives to service.
He described the serene atmosphere that Msgr. Ogudo fosters in the parish house, where hospitality is paramount. “Keeping food and kola is essential, as every parish house is a home for every priest,” he noted, highlighting Msgr. Ogudo’s principle of making fellow priests feel welcomed and valued. This practice reflects the warmth and generosity that define Msgr. Ogudo’s ministry.
Fr. Obe shared that Msgr. Ogudo views the visit of one priest to another as a sacramental act, illustrating the deep respect and significance he places on these interactions. He also acknowledged Msgr. Ogudo’s commitment to order and decorum in the liturgy, noting how he laid a solid foundation for liturgical practices within the diocese. His efforts in working on the new order of Mass, which received approval from the Nigerian Bishops, exemplify his dedication to fostering a vibrant and reverent worship experience.

Ogudoโs endearing way of addressing the bishop as “My father Bishop,” a testament to the respect and affection he holds for his fellow clergy. “We thank God for your life,” he concluded, inviting the congregation to celebrate and appreciate the invaluable contributions of Msgr. Ogudo and other elder priests, whose legacies continue to enrich the Church.

Eze as the oldest priest in the diocese and remarked on his remarkable demeanor, stating, “Even at his age, he gives no trouble.” This sentiment underscored Fr. Ezeโs gentle spirit and dedication to his vocation.
“Thank you for leading the way and showing us the path,” Fr. Obe expressed, recognizing the invaluable guidance that Fr. Eze and Msgr. Ogudo provide to younger priests. He extended his gratitude to Bigard Enugu and the seminarians currently working with Msgr. Ogudo, highlighting the importance of mentorship in the ongoing formation of future clergy.
Fr. Obe concluded with a heartfelt prayer, asking, “May God give us all the opportunity to show the light, so that our Church will be sustained for the future with joy, understanding, and filial love.” His words reflected deeply with the congregation, reinforcing a collective commitment to nurturing a vibrant and loving community of faith for generations to come.
