Over 200 Catholic Clergy Kidnapped in Nigeria: New Study Exposes Alarming Trend

By CSN Media

A recent study has revealed that 201 Catholic priests and seminarians have been kidnapped across Nigeria in the last decade, underscoring the growing insecurity in the land, and increasing attacks on the Church. The findings, compiled over several years, provide a comprehensive overview of the dangers faced by Catholic priests and facilities in the country. Of the 201 kidnapped clergy members, 186 were eventually released, while 15 were killedโ€”including two seminarians.

The study confirms that at the time of reporting, no priest or seminarian remains in captivity. ย The Diocese of Okigwe in Imo State recorded the highest number of kidnappings, with 47 priests abducted within the period under review. Meanwhile, the Archdiocese of Kaduna witnessed the highest number of fatalities, with four priests losing their lives to kidnappers.

Tragically, the study also notes that three priests died even after regaining their freedom, likely due to the trauma and injuries sustained during their captivity. Additionally, six priests were kidnapped more than once, showing a troubling pattern of recurring threats within certain vicinity and against particular individuals.

The kidnappings were not confined to one region but were recorded across more than 40 dioceses in Nigeria. The study indicates that while few priests managed to escape from their abductors, most were subjected to torture, brutality, and, in some cases, execution. Of the three seminarians that were kidnapped, only one survived. The loss of young men preparing for the priesthood underscores the growing danger for future generations of clergy in Nigeria.

Consequently, the study highlights the urgent need for improved security measures to protect Catholic priests, seminarians, other religious workers, and Nigerians generally. The Catholic Bishopsโ€™ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has repeatedly called on the government to address the worsening state of insecurity in the country. The revered body has been consistent in calling on authorities to take decisive action against the perpetrators of these crimes.

In conclusion, the continued abduction and killing of priests raise serious concerns about religious persecution and the freedom of worship in Nigeria. Nevertheless, the Church remains one of the strongest voices advocating for peace, justice, and security in Nigeria.
