Rev. Fr. David Okolie

Dearest friends,

In this part of the world, a number of persons yearn to be in LEADERSHIP positions; they want to be in charge. But more often than not, what is motivating this yearning is not the very dispositions of true leadership but sheer AMBITION.

However, the above seems to be common among people of every culture. The difference may be the influence of Civilization and Faith. Thus, among Christians, Leadership, no matter the level/nature (whether family, association, religious, state, etc.), should no longer be a position for dominion but that of HUMBLE SERVICE. Unfortunately, a number of persons in leadership positions in this part of the world understand the above in theory but hardly live it out.

The teaching of Jesus Christ on what Leadership is all about is quite clear. Thus, when his Apostles were driven by that dangerous AMBITION, he guided them thus: โ€œIf anyone wants to be FIRST, he shall be the last of all and the SERVANT of all” (cf. Mk 9:34). Yes, it is only a SINCERE understanding of the above teaching of Jesus that produces TRUE and GREAT LEADERS. Thus, the Catechism affirms:

For the Christian, “to REIGN is to SERVE him,” particularly when SERVING โ€œthe poor and the suffering, in whom the Church recognizes the image of her poor and suffering founder (cf. CCC n. 786).

May the Blessed Virgin Mary obtain for us the grace to always understand and live out the above teaching. Amen๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ

Remain blessed!
