VATICAN HOSTS GLOBAL ECUMENICAL PRAYER ON 62ND ANNIVERSARY OF VATICAN II AT ST PETER’S MARTYED SPOT

By P.J Usanga

In a bid to foster ecumenism and Christian unity, the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Promotion of Christian Unity, scheduled an ecumenical prayer in Piazza of the Protomartyrs, not far from the Synod Hall. Piazza, according to an immemorial tradition, is the spot where the Apostle Peter was martyred. The exercise will take place on October 11, 2024, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The scheduled date holds great significance, coinciding with the 62nd anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council, which revolutionized Catholicism’s relationship with other Christian denominations.

This special prayer, also commemorates 60 years since the publication of two important church documents: Lumen Gentium (Dogmatic Constitution on the Church) and Unitatis Redintegratio (Decree on Ecumenism).

Organized by the General Secretariat of the Synod and the Dicastery for the Promotion of Christian Unity, in collaboration with brothers from the Taizรฉ Community, this event aims to give thanks for the ecumenical progress of Vatican II, since its inception on 11 October 1962.

The Taizรฉ Community therefore, invites local communities worldwide to join in simultaneous ecumenical prayers, taking after last year’s successful “Together” initiative.
