Rev. Fr. David Okolie

Dearest friends,

Did you know that next SUNDAY, JULY 28, 2024, is the โ€˜World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly’? The Church has attached a PLENARY INDULGENCE to the celebration (I’ll explain what that means below). Meanwhile, to obtain the INDULGENCE, follow these steps on that day:

1. Go to Sacramental Confession and have no attachment to sin.
2. Receive Holy Communion.
3. Pray for the Pope’s Intentions (usually, one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be).
4. Visit the Elderly (physically or virtually, through the media).

๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸผNow, PLENARY INDULGENCE is the total removal of all temporal punishments due to sins whose guilt has been forgiven in the Sacrament of Confession (cf. CCC, n. 1471). This is possible through the merits of Jesus Christ and the saints, which the Church applies for the spiritual good of the faithful with her divine authority.

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ TEMPORAL PUNISHMENTย is the punishment that remains after the guilt of sin has been forgiven in Sacramental Confession (cf. CCC, nos. 1472-1473). What the above means is this: When one commits sin, he/she attracts double punishments: ETERNAL and TEMPORAL. If the person repents and goes to Confession, the eternal punishment and guilt are removed, but the temporal punishment remains. The person must work out the removal of the temporal punishments, which can be done through gaining INDULGENCE (cf. CCC, nos. 1471, 1474-1479).

Fortunately, the Indulgence will be obtainable on Sunday, July 28, 2024, under the prescribed conditions.

PRIESTS can also use this opportunity to celebrate the elderly in their parishes and visit some of them who could not come. Please inform the faithful about this great opportunity and be available to hear their Confessions before that day. Don’t miss this holy opportunity, and kindly inform others about it.

Remain blessed!
