The Catholic Community of St. Pius X Parish, Karu, warmly welcomed the Auxiliary Bishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, His Lordship, Most Rev. Dr. Anselm Umoren, on February 2, 2025. The visit coincided with his 13th episcopal anniversary, drawing a large gathering of parishioners and guests from across the Archdiocese.
Bishop Umoren was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Abuja by Pope Benedict XVI on November 18, 2011. Before his appointment, he served as Superior General of the Society of Missionaries of St. Paul (MSP). Born on April 14, 1962, in Ukana-Nto, Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, he was consecrated bishop on February 2, 2012, during the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord.
As part of his pastoral duties during the visit, Bishop Umoren celebrated the Holy Mass, administered the sacrament of baptism, and inspected the ongoing church building project led by the Parish Priest and Dean of Karu Deanery, Very Rev. Fr. Vincent May Ogunsoro.
During the Mass, nine infants were baptized, formally initiating them into the Catholic faith.
In his homily, Bishop Umoren emphasized the significance of baptism as the foundation of Christian life, stating, “Without baptism, you cannot receive other sacraments.” He urged parents and sponsors to uphold their responsibilities in nurturing the children in faith and encouraged the parish community to support them in raising God-fearing individuals.
He concluded with prayers for divine blessings upon all present at the Eucharistic celebration. The choirโs exceptional performance enriched the solemn occasion, filling the packed church auditorium with melodious hymns.
Following the Mass, Bishop Umoren toured the church building project, commending Fr. Vincent and the engineers for their dedication and invoking Godโs blessings on their efforts.
A grand reception was later held in his honor, attended by priests from within and beyond Karu Deanery, Reverend Sisters, and distinguished guests.
Speaking at the event, Parish Pastoral Council Vice Chairman, Mr. John Atagher, expressed gratitude, saying, โMay God continue to increase His Lordship in wisdom and preserve him as he shepherds the flock of God in the Archdiocese.”
