Catholic Bishops call for review of Fuel Subsidy Removal, Naira Devaluation

The Catholic Bishopsโ€™ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has expressed significant concerns over the harsh economic and social conditions affecting Nigerians, highlighting issues such as corruption, a heavy debt burden, and multiple taxation.

These concerns were articulated in a communiquรฉ issued at the conclusion of their second plenary session, held in Auchi, Edo State.

In the communiquรฉ jointly signed by the CBCN President, Archbishop Lucius Ugorji of Owerri, and the Secretary, Bishop Donatus Ogun of Uromi, the bishops criticised the governmentโ€™s management of these issues, urging a reevaluation of current economic policies to mitigate the suffering of the populace.

The bishops particularly condemned the governmentโ€™s economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the devaluation of the Naira, which they argue have led to severe inflation and worsened living conditions.

They urged the government to reconsider these policies and shift towards sustainable, people-centered development, increased transparency and accountability in governance.

Regarding food insecurity and the rising cost of basic necessities, the bishops acknowledged the governmentโ€™s efforts but criticised the ongoing surge in food prices despite these measures.

The clergymen called for comprehensive policies to address the root causes of food insecurity, including enhanced support for farmers and small businesses, and urged the government to prioritise achieving food self-sufficiency.

The bishops also addressed the issue of private โ€œministriesโ€ operated by some priests and lay faithful, which they said are often marked by unorthodox practices. They warned that these private ministries contribute to division within the Church and distract priests from their primary pastoral duties.

Additionally, the bishops called for the government to support the Catholic Churchโ€™s contributions to education and healthcare with financial subsidies, highlighting the role of Catholic institutions in serving the public good. They emphasised that these services should be recognised as public resources deserving of government support.
